For those of us who dedicate ourselves to the world food all the time, it is necessary to have a couple of tricks that help remind us of the delicacies that cross our paths. The tips to travel as experts of gastronomy that I will share with you today will help you savor the edible souvenirs cross your path, many of which come in heavy and fragile packages. The trick is to have some basic packaging materials on hand that help to avoid disasters during the trip home and allow those treasures to arrive safely home.

Bolsa de lona suave y hermética

I went crazy with everything I saw and smelled when I went to India; many of the spices that I love so much are from that country. So you might imagine that I wanted to bring many as I could home with me. An expert friend recommended that I carry a Yeti backpack, perfect to protect the spices because it is hermetic and resistant to moisture. The straps are padded to be used as a backpack, or to carry the bag in your hand or over your shoulder like a normal canvas bag. The soft sides can be filled to capacity, or tightened around smaller loads with travel straps. It has durable waterproof sides and a durable, leak-free zipper that are incredibly effective at keeping fragrant foods sealed and protected from moisture. I usually keep this inside another suitcase when I travel home so I protect the rest of the things in the suitcase as well. I have also used it as carry-on luggage.

Rolling bottles in pants and shirts is not the best way to pack a bottle of that Oaxacan wine or mezcal that stole your heart–doing it that way always puts bottles at risk. If you check your bags, believe me, the security agents will not roll the bottles back up into the clothes and there is always the risk that your clothes will end up filled with broken glass and the precious liquid. To avoid any accident with bottles of wine, distillates or some other liquid such as oils or vinegars, there are these wonderful protective bags that are ideal to travel safely inside any suitcase.
Dual Purpose Carry-On

This is not just any carry on–it is one of my most cherished travel items that I use to protect my edible treasures. It is elegant enough to fit in most of the upper compartments in planes, but sturdy enough to carry safely with bottles of wine for the bag check. It has a lot of interior pockets with zippers items with strange shapes, preventing them from breaking. It is perfect for the food that you do not want to leave in the luggage section and it protects the aromas very well. If you check it with liquids, it will protect them perfectly. And best of all, the front part detached and is a smaller suitcase where you can put your computer and personal belongings. It is one of the best carry-on items I’ve ever had.
Set of Travel Organizers

It is always good to have suitcases that are well organized and even better when we can have extra protection for our clothes while we travel with liquids and food. That’s why these beautiful cubes are very useful to maximize space and keep similar items together. They are waterproof and the set comes with several sizes that can be used in a carry-on or checked bag.
Reusable Silicone Bags

Ok, these are extremely functional for many reasons. They are much better than those sold in the supermarket–they are much more resistant and can be reused because they can be washed better. They are ideal for tea, spices and other tasty souvenirs that can be removed from their original packaging and put into these bags where they will be much better preserved. They are not contaminated with other aromas and smells. They are also good for things that need to be frozen or refrigerated, paired with some things that I recommend below for maintaining temperatures. Remember that you must clearly label what each bag contains. Bring masking tape and a pen for labeling to be able to use them again.
Packing Tape

With the exception of the bottle bags mentioned above, bubble wrap is a waste of valuable luggage space. Ideally, wrap small, fragile or oddly shaped materials in a few layers of clothing and tape them together as necessary. Also with this tape I pack many things at home, I love it and the option that has worked best for me is the one recommended with the link above.

There are times when bottles of vinegar or oil are very large and weigh a lot because of the glass, so it is better to use travel bottles that you can even bring in your suitcase. Many places sell oil and vinegars in small quantities or you can even fill several of these bottles instead of the cumbersome big ones that some products come in. These same bottles can be put in the aforementioned reusable plastic bags. Remember to use masking tape to identify what you put in each bottle.
Lunch Cooler

I have traveled with truffle oil, cheese and other things that should be refrigerated. So I ended up buying this marvel of lunch cooler that has since allowed me to bring tastier, healthier foods on long journeys (airplane food is ominous, as we have talked about in previous articles). Professional advice: store the cooler in your suitcase, then fill it with delicate and delicious souvenirs such as macaroons and chocolates. The structured sides prevent the boxes from moving in flight. Its compact size easily fits under your seat.
Frozen Gel Packs

Do not be afraid to travel with food that is temperature-sensitive, there is always a way! Gel packs, when frozen, are generally allowed through airport security. Buy your perishable foods as cold as possible before hitting the road or airplane, then pack them in a small cooler with 2 or 4 of these frozen gel packs. When traveling in the country, dairy products and meats for personal consumption are easy to transport. For international travel, of course, check the customs and border regulations of the country you enter before putting that leg of ham in your hand luggage.
