Cerveza Noche Buena, the beer for celebrating Christmas.

Cerveza Noche Buena is one of the most eagerly awaited «Special Editions». Crafted mainly for the winter holiday season, this cherished bottle by the Cuauhtémoc/Heineken group is only available from October to December.

Cerveza Noche Buena

The history of this traditional Mexican beer began in 1924 with the german brewmasters who founded a brewery in Orizaba, Veracruz. It is said that they began to elaborate their beer in small quantities, only for their personal consumption during their nostalgic meetings. Years later, they started giving it away as a gift for managers and friends, calling it «Reserve of the House». It was such a success that they they decided to market it exclusively during the winter season. And that’s how it came to be named «Noche Buena».

There is a legend that the recipe emerged in a monastery in Munich, made for serving it as a food during Lent when monks were only allowed to drink.

Cerveza Noche Buena is a Bock style beer, traditionally made for the winter season. Bock beers are part of the Lager family, generally embraced in cold climates. This is why it’s sold exclusively from October to December. If you are lucky enough, you may be able to find it in January or February, depending on how many of them were sold.

Bock beers can be dark or light. They are usually thick bodied and can contain a high degree of alcohol (between 4.5% and 6.5%). Most of them are made with barley. There may also be variations like the Doppelbock, Weizenbock, Maibock and Eisbock. Some of these are meant to be consumed in the Spring while others are made for Autumn.

Cerveza Noche Buena is made with malt. They have a hefty character, with strong notes of sweet toasted grains and hops. As any good lager, it is kept at cold temperatures after fermenting.

Now you know: if you happen to see one during the holidays, or even a couple boxes of Cerveza Noche Buena, do not hesitate to take them all home.
